This will be the last newsletter of 2024. I thought about doing something very introspective and then I thought: why not, in the spirit of giving, give a few quick tips to the people.
It’s my goal to keep this week’s newsletter light and brief. All I ask in return is for some feedback.
I have been thinking of including a short video with each newsletter starting in 2025. Something under one minute summarizing the article. So, if you haven’t already, leave a comment on whether you think that’s a good idea and include some future topics you would like me to cover!
When I was coaching ACHA Hockey at Stevenson University while working full-time, people would ask how I was able to get all of that done. None of what I am about to say is groundbreaking, but I think it just boils down to discipline and effort to stick to what works for you and your situation.
For me, it starts with planning; If it’s not on the calendar, it doesn’t exist. It drives my family crazy, but it is something I swear by.
Sometimes it can feel impossible to remember everything. If there’s something I need to do, somewhere I need to be, or something I can’t forget, it goes on the calendar. Every evening before I unplug for the day, I review what’s on tap for tomorrow. Every morning after I wake up and get going, my calendar is open, and I am starting to organize my thoughts for the day.

Planning with a calendar establishes a foundation of organization. The motivation for me to stay organized is time saved. As a student of lean principles, I am always looking to eliminate “waste” in my life. Spending time looking for things or having to do massive cleaning sessions, because I didn’t clean as I went is a big waste of time for me.
The tip here is finding your “why” as Sinek says. For me, knowing the time I will save later, by taking the time to put things where they go, or adding things to the calendar makes it easier to stay disciplined to an organized approach to life.
My final tip of this newsletter has to do with communication. Again, something simple, but it is something I must remind myself to do. Everyone needs help at times or a break. I find that so many people are suffering in silence, stuck in their own heads. Challenge yourself to speak up. Ask for help, ask for a break, ask for an evening off to reconnect with friends. Communicating your needs can help you stick to planning and organizational routines too.
Some of these sound easy but can be difficult to establish as a routine.
